From budget rooms with a shuttle bus to 5-star towers overlooking the Haram, we help you choose the right hotel for your family and confirm the name and walking distance in writing before you pay.
Ask anyone who has performed Umrah what they would change, and many will say the hotel. Five daily prayers, Tawaf, Sa’i and night worship mean you may walk to the Haram and back several times a day. A short walk lets you rest between prayers. A long walk or a shuttle queue can leave elderly parents exhausted by the third day.
The hotel is also the largest cost you control. A room facing Masjid al-Haram can cost several times more than a clean, comfortable room 1 to 2 km away. The right choice depends on your budget, your health and who you are travelling with, and that is the conversation we have with every family before we book.
There is also a legal reason the hotel comes first. Saudi Arabia only issues an Umrah visa to Pakistani pilgrims once accommodation in Makkah and Madinah is confirmed and linked to the official Nusuk Masar system. So your hotel booking is not just about comfort; it is the foundation of your Umrah visa.
Makkah hotels fall into a few broad zones around Masjid al-Haram. Straight-line distance is only part of the story; slopes, road crossings and crowd routes at prayer time all affect how long the walk really takes.
The towers directly in front of the King Abdulaziz Gate are the closest you can stay. Some rooms look straight onto the Kaaba, and you can reach the mosque in minutes, even in a wheelchair. These are the most expensive rooms in the city, especially in Ramadan. Hotels in this group on our list include Swissotel Makkah, Swissotel Al Maqam, Fairmont Makkah Clock Royal Tower, Raffles Makkah Palace, Makkah Towers, Mövenpick Hajar Tower and Marwa Rayhaan by Rotana.
A newer district on the western side of the Haram with modern 5-star brands, wide walkways and food courts. The walk is short and well paved. On our list: Hilton Suites, Hilton Convention, Conrad, Marriott Jabal Omar, Hyatt Regency, Address Jabal Omar, DoubleTree by Hilton and Sheraton.
Streets running south and west of the Haram with a wider mix of 3, 4 and 5-star hotels. Prices drop as you move further out, and a 5 to 15-minute walk is common. Examples include Makkah Hotel (ex-Hilton), Dar Al Tawhid InterContinental, Safwa Tower, Anjum Hotel, Saja Makkah and Al Ebaa Hotel, which is around 600 metres from the Haram.
Hotels in areas such as Kudai and Aziziyah run buses to a drop-off point near the Haram. They are the most budget-friendly choice and often have larger rooms. Expect to plan around the bus timetable and crowds after Jumu’ah and Isha. Shuttle hotels we book include Retaj Inn, Al Hidaya Tower, Al Kiswa Tower, Millennium Al Dana, voco Makkah and Le Méridien Towers.
Madinah is easier to plan than Makkah. Most good hotels sit in the Markazia, the central zone that wraps around Masjid an-Nabawi, and many are within a few minutes’ walk of a mosque gate. What matters most is which side of the mosque your hotel faces, because the mosque is large and the gate you use changes your walking time.
These properties sit close to the mosque courtyard. On our list: Dar Al Iman InterContinental, Dar Al Hijra InterContinental, Dar Al Taqwa, Hilton Madinah, Sofitel Shahd Al Madinah, Crowne Plaza, Frontel Al Harithia, Taiba Front and Al Aqeeq.
Comfortable 3 and 4-star options a little further out, popular with groups and families: Emaar Taibah, Emaar Royal, Emaar Elite, Emaar Andalusia, Elaf Taiba, Elaf Al Taqwa, Maden Hotel, Saja Al Madinah, Nozol Royal Inn, Shaza Regency Plaza, Grand Plaza, Plaza Inn Ohud, Arkan Al Manar, Maysan Al Taqwa and Al Manakha Rotana.
Because Madinah hotels of the same standard are often cheaper than Makkah hotels, a slightly longer Madinah stay can lower your total package price without reducing comfort.
| Category | Typical walk to the Haram | Room sharing | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|

| 4-star | About 5 to 10 minutes | Triple or double | Most families |
| 5-star front row | A few minutes or less | Double or family suite | Elderly parents, VIP and Ramadan stays |
Walking times are general guidance and depend on the exact tower, entrance and gate. We confirm the real distance for the hotel you choose. Live prices for every property are on our Makkah and Madinah hotel rates page.
If you are travelling with parents over 60, someone with knee or heart problems, or small children, give that person’s comfort priority. A closer hotel often saves money elsewhere, because you will not need taxis to and from the Haram.
Two hotels 500 metres away can feel very different if one route is flat and the other climbs a hill or crosses a busy road. Ask which gate the hotel is nearest to.
Quad sharing is the cheapest per person. Double and twin rooms usually cost noticeably more per head, but give couples and older travellers more privacy and rest.
Breakfast, shuttle times, lifts for every floor and wheelchair access vary from hotel to hotel. In large towers, also ask which tower your room is in, as some complexes have several buildings.
Rooms near the Haram sell out first in Ramadan, school holidays and the weeks around the end of the season. If those are your dates, book months ahead rather than weeks. Our guide to Umrah costs from Islamabad shows how season affects the hotel price.

The towers of the Abraj Al Bait (Clock Tower) complex, such as Swissotel, Fairmont, Raffles and Mövenpick Hajar, and the front hotels of Jabal Omar are among the closest. They are also the most expensive, especially in Ramadan.
It means the hotel is too far to walk comfortably, so it runs buses to a stop near the Haram. It costs less, but you travel on the bus timetable and may wait during busy prayer times.
Many pilgrims split their nights roughly evenly. Madinah hotels are often cheaper and the city is calmer, so families on a budget sometimes add a night or two there. Makkah is where you perform Umrah and may want extra Tawaf.
Yes, we can book hotels on their own. If you need an Umrah visa, though, Saudi rules require a confirmed hotel and transport booking before the visa is issued.
Most hotels check in during the afternoon and check out around midday. If your flight lands early in the morning, ask us about early check-in or keeping your bags at the hotel.
Some rates include breakfast and some are room only. Your quote will state which applies. There are plenty of restaurants and food courts around both Harams.
As early as possible. Front-row hotels for the last ten nights of Ramadan often sell out months before the month begins.
